Most backyard chickens live somewhere between 5 and 10 years.
Some have much shorter lives. Others keep strolling around the yard well past 10, acting as though they have personally owned the property since it was built.
Breed, genetics, housing, nutrition, predators, disease and plain old luck can all affect how long an individual chicken lives.
But lifespan is only part of what new chicken keepers are really asking.
They also want to know when chickens start laying, how long they continue producing eggs, when a hen is considered old and what changes as the flock moves from fluffy chicks to seasoned backyard retirees.
A chicken may spend only a few months growing into adulthood, then live for many more years after her highest-producing laying period has passed. Understanding that full timeline makes it easier to plan for the kind of long-term care a backyard flock may need.
How Long Do Backyard Chickens Live?
A well-cared-for backyard chicken may live for 5 to 10 years, with some reaching an even older age.
That range is broad because chickens do not all age at the same rate.
A heritage-breed hen kept in a secure backyard coop may have a very different lifespan from a high-producing hybrid, a bird exposed to frequent predators or a chicken dealing with chronic health problems.
Roosters and hens can both live for several years. Their sex alone does not determine lifespan, although their daily risks may differ. Roosters may experience more fighting, territorial behavior or predator exposure, while laying hens face the physical demands of repeated egg production.
The answer also depends on what someone means by “how long chickens live.”
There is a difference between:
- Total lifespan: How many years the chicken remains alive

Stage 1: Newly Hatched Chicks
Typical age: Birth to about 8 weeks
The first weeks of a chicken’s life bring more visible change than almost any other stage.
A newly hatched chick begins life covered in soft down. Over the following weeks, she grows quickly, develops true feathers and becomes steadily better at regulating her own body temperature.
Young chicks need:
- A clean, secure brooder
- Appropriate warmth that can be reduced as they feather out
- Fresh water in a chick-safe waterer
- A complete starter feed
- Enough room to move away from the heat source when comfortable
This stage is short, but it lays the groundwork for later development.
Watch the chicks rather than relying only on a calendar. Chicks crowding tightly beneath the heat may be cold, while chicks avoiding it and panting may be too warm.

Stage 2: Growing Pullets
Typical age: About 8 to 20 weeks
A pullet is a young female chicken that has not yet reached full maturity. The term can technically apply for longer, but backyard keepers often use it when talking about the growing period before a hen begins laying.
By this stage, the awkward half-feathered chick look has mostly passed.
Pullets continue building their adult frame, feathers and reproductive system. Their combs and wattles may become larger and more colorful as laying age approaches.
You may also notice:
- More confident scratching and foraging
- A clearer place within the flock’s pecking order
- Interest in nesting areas
- Squatting behavior when approached
- More redness in the comb and wattles
Not every pullet follows the same schedule.
Some egg-laying breeds may produce their first eggs around 18 to 20 weeks. Larger or slower-maturing breeds may take considerably longer.
A late first egg is not automatically a problem, especially when the pullet otherwise appears healthy and is still developing normally.
Stage 3: Young Laying Hens
Typical age: About 5 months to 2 years
The first egg is one of those backyard milestones that can make a completely normal person take 14 photos of an object smaller than a golf ball.
Early eggs may be:
- Smaller than expected
- Irregularly shaped
- Soft-shelled or oddly textured
- Laid somewhere other than the nesting box
Those early surprises often become less common as the hen’s laying cycle settles into a rhythm.
For many hens, the first two years contain their highest overall egg production. That does not mean every hen lays daily or follows a perfectly predictable schedule.
Egg production can change with:
- Breed and genetics
- Daylight
- Molting
- Broodiness
- Stress
- Nutrition and water intake

A temporary laying slowdown does not necessarily mean the hen is getting old. Seasonal changes and molting can reduce or pause production even in young, healthy birds.
Stage 4: Mature Adult Hens
Typical age: About 2 to 5 years
By two years old, most hens have settled firmly into adulthood.
They know where the good dust-bathing spot is. They know which human carries snacks. And they know exactly how long the garden gate needs to remain open before making their move.
Many adult hens continue laying for years, but their annual egg total usually declines as they age.
The change may be gradual rather than sudden. You might notice:
- Longer gaps between eggs
- A more noticeable seasonal break
- Slower recovery after a molt
- Larger eggs from some hens
- Less predictable production overall
An adult hen who no longer produces like she did during her first year is not necessarily unhealthy.
Egg count and lifespan are separate. A hen can remain an active member of the flock long after her peak laying years.
Stage 5: Senior Chickens
Typical age: Often 5 years and older
There is no universally agreed birthday when a chicken officially becomes a senior.
Five years is a useful point to begin paying closer attention to age-related changes, but some chickens appear old sooner and others remain surprisingly spry for much longer.
An older hen may still forage, dust bathe, socialize and occasionally lay eggs. The difference is often in how quickly she moves, how well she maintains her condition and how easily she keeps up with the rest of the flock.
Possible signs of aging in chickens
Normal aging may bring changes such as:
- Fewer eggs or no eggs
- Longer resting periods
- Slower movement
- Less assertiveness around feeders
- More difficulty reaching high roosts
- Gradual changes in body condition
- More time needed to recover after stress or molting
Do not assume every change is simply old age.
Chickens naturally hide signs of weakness. A bird that suddenly stops eating, isolates herself, struggles to breathe, cannot stand or changes dramatically over a short period may be sick or injured rather than merely aging.

Senior flock care is often less about creating an entirely new routine and more about removing small obstacles.
Helpful adjustments may include:

Hens can continue laying for several years, but they usually do not produce at the same rate throughout their lives.
Most begin laying around 5 to 6 months old, although breed and season can shift that timing.
The first two years are commonly the most productive. After that, production generally becomes less consistent.
A healthy older hen may still lay occasional eggs at 5, 6 or even more years old. Another hen may stop much sooner.
Rather than expecting a fixed retirement date, think of laying as a curve:
- The pullet begins laying
- Production builds and becomes more consistent
- The hen reaches her strongest laying period
- Production gradually slows with age

Do Chickens Stop Laying When They Get Old?
Eventually, most hens will lay very few eggs or stop altogether.

A sudden stop in laying should not automatically be blamed on age. Consider whether the hen may be:

High-production hybrids are bred to produce a large number of eggs efficiently. Individual birds may still live for many years, but heavy production places substantial demands on the body.
Breed is only one part of the picture.
A chicken’s actual lifespan may be shaped just as strongly by:
- Predator protection
- Disease exposure
- Climate and shelter
- Nutrition
- Body condition
- Breeding history
- Access to timely care when something changes
A well-protected mixed-breed hen can outlive a poorly managed bird from a breed known for longevity.
What Shortens a Chicken’s Lifespan?
Many backyard chickens do not die from old age.

Build serious predator protection
A coop should be secure after dark, including the doors, windows, vents and any point where the structure meets the ground.
Chicken wire may keep chickens contained, but stronger hardware cloth is generally the better choice for openings that need to resist predators.
Check the coop regularly. A latch that worked last year may be loose now, and determined animals tend to find the one weak spot no one noticed.
Keep water clean and available
Chickens need continuous access to fresh water.
Water consumption rises in hot weather, and a knocked-over or contaminated waterer can become serious quickly.
Placing the waterer at a practical height can help keep bedding and dirt out without making it difficult for smaller or older birds to reach.
Feed for the chicken’s life stage
Chicks, growing pullets and laying hens do not need identical formulas.
A complete feed provides the foundation of the daily diet. Too many treats, scratch grains or table scraps can reduce how much balanced feed the flock consumes.

Chickens need shade, ventilation and plenty of water during hot weather.
In cold climates, a dry coop with good ventilation is generally more important than sealing the building tightly. Moisture buildup can contribute to respiratory trouble and frostbite.
Older chickens may need extra observation during temperature extremes because they may not compete as readily for the most comfortable spots.
Learn what is normal for each bird
A flock check does not need to become a formal inspection with a clipboard.
Simply pay attention while filling feeders or collecting eggs.
Notice who is:
- Eating and drinking
- Walking normally
- Joining flock activity
- Maintaining a steady body condition
- Behaving differently from the day before

Can Chickens Live 10 Years or Longer?
Yes. Some backyard chickens live for 10 years or more.
That does not mean every chicken will reach that age, even with excellent care.
Genetics, unexpected illness and reproductive problems can affect birds that otherwise live in well-managed flocks.
Ten years should be seen as possible rather than promised.
It is also worth considering before bringing home a box of chicks. Chickens may outlive their strongest egg-laying years by several years, making them a longer commitment than some first-time keepers expect.
Can Chickens Die of Old Age?
Chickens can reach the end of a long natural life, but “old age” is usually a broad description rather than a specific diagnosis.
As birds age, they may become less resilient and more vulnerable to underlying health problems.
A gradual decline may include reduced activity, weight loss, less interest in food and difficulty keeping up with the flock. Sudden or severe changes should not be assumed to be a normal part of aging.
When an older chicken’s comfort or quality of life becomes uncertain, the goal shifts from counting years to preventing unnecessary suffering.
How Can You Tell How Old a Chicken Is?
Once a chicken reaches adulthood, determining her exact age by appearance can be difficult.
You may be able to make a rough estimate from clues such as:
- Overall feather condition
- Leg and foot texture
- Spur development, particularly in roosters
- Comb appearance
- Laying history
- What the previous owner knows about the flock
None of these is an exact clock.
Feathers change during molts. Leg condition varies by breed and environment. Egg production can fall for many reasons unrelated to age.
The only dependable way to know a chicken’s exact age is to have a hatch date or reliable record.
What Should Older Chickens Eat?
An older chicken still needs balanced nutrition, clean water and regular access to the feeder.
A laying hen that continues producing eggs can generally remain on a complete layer feed. Oyster shell can be offered separately so actively laying hens can consume additional calcium as needed.
In a flock containing non-laying adults and active layers, feeding decisions become less tidy. The best setup depends on the ages, health and laying status of the birds sharing the coop.
Whatever feed you choose, watch whether older hens can comfortably eat it and whether more assertive flockmates are pushing them away.
